DoF, MWASIP tours Tree Growers in Ntcheu
Posted on 08-Jun-2023
On 08th June 2023, The Department of Forestry through Malawi Watershed Services Improvement Project (MWASIP) extensively toured Shabano village in the area of Traditional Authority Mpando in Ntcheu where tree farmers are complementing government restoration efforts by planting and managing trees.
In his remarks, MWASIP Technical Team member Osward Mulenga said the project is providing tree farmers with Performance Based Grants to help maintain healthy trees and forests, plant new trees, and ensure sustainable management practices.
"Tree growers can provide economic benefits to local communities and promote job growth in the forestry sector", said Mulenga.
On his part, Forestry Officer Rodgers Tumba said the Department of Forestry is regulating the forestry industry and enforcing laws that protect trees and forests and their ecosystems, and therefore described MWASIP as a program that is promoting responsible reforestation efforts.
"Through MWASIP, the Government is supporting initiatives that are fostering forest landscape restoration, and sustainable forest management," said Tumba.
Meanwhile, the Director of Forestry Stella Funsani Gama says the relationship between the Department of Forestry and MWASIP is crucial to ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of trees and forests in the country.
