Malawi embraced a tripartite commemoration of World Wetlands Day, World Wildlife Day, and World Rangers Day today on 05th June 2023 at Dyeratu  Primary School ground in Chikwawa under the theme "Partnership for Nature Conservation and Restoration".

Speaking at the event, Minister of Tourism Honourable Vera Kamtukule said partnerships are essential for nature conservation and restoration as they bring together diverse stakeholders, expertise, resources, and perspectives to address complex conservation challenges.

"The important aspect of the partnership is the promotion of ecotourism and forest landscape restoration, which can provide economic benefits to local communities while also encouraging the conservation of natural habitats and wildlife through the establishment of community-based tourism enterprises where  local communities can generate income through the provision of services such as accommodation, guiding, and cultural experiences", said Hon. Kamtukule.

On her part, Forestry Officer Lonny Chirambo concured with the Minister by emphasizing the importance of sustainable forestry management practices and the need to protect and conserve the country's forests.

Chirambo said, "forests provide timber, non-timber forest products, fuelwood, ecosystem services such as water regulation, biodiversity conservation, and mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere".

Meanwhile, Director of Forestry Stella Funsani Gama says the Department of Forestry is implementing various forestry interventions for  conservation, establishment, protection and management of trees and forests for the sustainable development of the country.
